Blindfolds

I just don't understand
Why there's so much demand
For blindfolds and handcuffs and lies,
And I can't figure out
Why we can't live without
Closing our minds and our eyes.

And it's tabloids and soaps,
And it's liquor and dope,
And sitcoms without any laughs.
It's meeting your heroes
Ignoring their theories
In favour of their autographs.

You can believe in fairy-tales,
You can believe in your third eye.
You can believe God or science,
You can believe that you can fly.
You can believe in lasting love,
That you cannot live without it.
You can believe in what you want;.
I'd prefer to think about it.

I'm sure there is more than
The bible and Koran,
There's more to God than foreign words.
And if He existed
I'd long have insisted
We gave him what he deserved.

And it's rituals and prayer
And it's hope and despair,
It's shaking in fear of the Beast.
And it's money and land,
The apocalypse and
It's begging pardon from a priest.

You can believe in fairy-tales,
You can believe in your third eye.
You can believe God or science,
You can believe that you can fly.
You can believe in lasting love,
That you cannot live without it.
You can believe in what you want;
I'd prefer to think about it.

I'm savage and angry
And how can you blame me?
We all worship banality.
The lying T.V. screen
Tells me that a marine
Would be all that I could be.

And it's godlike perfume,
It's a cleaner bathroom,
It's nature-inspired shampoo.
And it's up the brightness
To show that your night-dress
Is one wash from as good as new.

You can believe in fairy-tales,
You can believe in your third eye.
You can believe God or science,
You can believe that you can fly.
You can believe in lasting love,
That you cannot live without it.
You can believe in what you want,
I'd prefer to think about it.

It seems each school of thought
Has become a new sport,
With annual appreciation.
Our books, plays, and paintings,
Are poisoned by ratings:
Live for a year and they're gone.

And it's book of the year,
And the songs that you hear
Six times in one week then no more.
And it's waiting with glee
For the next casualty
And forgetting what came before.

You can believe in fairy-tales,
You can believe in your third eye.
You can believe God or science,
You can believe that you can fly.
You can believe in lasting love,
That you cannot live without it.
You can believe in what you want;
I'd prefer to think about it.

And it makes me despair
That you don't even care.
You're fine with the way that things are.
And I'm through expressing
There's point to a question
When you don't know the answer.

So go to your talk-shows,
Your T.V.s, radios,
Your tabloids, your God, and your quack.
Go hide in certainty.
When you start to miss me
Know that you can always come back.

You can believe in fairy-tales,
You can believe in your third eye.
You can believe God or science,
You can believe that you can fly.
You can believe in lasting love,
That you cannot live without it.
You can believe in what you want;
I'd prefer you think about it.
