Fair-weather Friends

I'm a better person
Than the world deserves to have in it
And it might turn its back on me
And leave me all alone.
But I'm a better person
Than the world deserves to have in it,
So come the thunder, come the rain,
Come the vengeance, come the wrath,
Come the misery, the pain;
I will write their epitaph.
I'll wallow in the apathy
Born of a perfect plan;
Explain it to their children best I can.

And my
Rainy-day Christian, fair-weather friends
Say
“We used to think you beautiful,
But now we think you've changed.
You were a better person
Than this world deserved to have around,
You started off from sanity
And so it's madness that you've found.”

I'm a better person
Than anyone will see in me:
I say what I feel and I feel
Nothing, nothing at all.
Yes, I'm a better person
Than the world deserves to have in it,
So come the mocking, come the jibes,
Come the cruelty, come the shame,
Come envy engendered lies:
I'll forgive them all again
Because all I'll feel is nothing,
And I'll take it to heart,
And show them I was better from the start.

And my
Rainy-day Christian, fair-weather friends
Say
“We used to think your sophistry
Was only harmless fun.
You were a better person
Than this world deserved to have around,
Agnosticism was better,
Because it's heresy you've found.”

I'm a better person
Than the world deserves to have in it,
And I'm a better person now
I've thrown the lies away.
I'm a better person now
Than the world deserves to have in it,
So say 'I love you', say 'I send
My best wishes while you sleep',
Say 'I miss you', say 'my friend',
Stay silent and only weep;
I'll thank you for your courtesy,
I'll wish you a good night,
And bless you from my fortress of the Right.

And my
Rainy-day Christian, fair-weather friends
Say
“We all thought you were annoying,
We used to think you cruel,
We gave you far more friendship
Than your twisted heart could ever hold;
Now you're trapped in isolation,
You're lonely and you're getting old.”
