Bad Dreams

Oh, I long for a world where things are what they seem
And where everything seems to be fine,
For a world where bad dreams were just a bad dream,
And where humourís not hard to define.

Iíve made money,
Made friends,
Iíve made love,
Iíve made jokes,
Iíve made peace and Iíve made people smile,
But for all of the laughter and all of the joy
Iíve made nothing that lasted the long winter while.

Old Jonathan Swift was a fine satirist,
But his outrage burned bright every day,
And though I delight in most all of his writing
I would throw each perfect page away
For hope of a world where his vision was heeded
Before even spoken and therefore not needed.

Oh, I long for a world where things are what they seem
And where everything seems to be fine,
For a world where bad dreams were just a bad dream,
And where freedomís not hard to define.

Iíve made money,
Made friends,
Iíve made love,
Iíve made jokes,
Iíve made peace and Iíve made people smile,
But for all of the laughter and all of the joy
Iíve made nothing that lasted the long winter while.
Iíve got nothing that lasts through the long winter while.

Abraham Lincoln gave me much to think on,
With his speeches of equality,
But emancipation from his inauguration,
Is all that he wanted to see.
Because work and worry forced him into the ground
Before Booth entered booth and his time came around.
