Fire

We're smoking together as the sun sets
And we don't care we're out of cigarettes.
Early this morning we watched the sunrise
Watched the world fill up with panicked surprise,
Did what we could to enjoy our last day,
Watched human culture turn to disarray.
Drove to our hilltop to see out the night,
Both a bit tired but feeling alright.

We talk of school, of the teachers we knew,
Wonder if anything they said was true,
Not that it matters; the sun's going down,
Three hours from now we won't be around.
I never used Maths, I never used Chem,
And Economics, we never used them.
We never used Physics but it was fun
Learning how to make a nuclear bomb.

We'll sit on the hilltop and watch the world burn.
We don't need an education 'cause there's nothing left to learn.
Burn all the books and all the libraries
Set fire to the schools and to the universities.
We'll sit on the hilltop and watch the world burn.
We don't need an education 'cause there's nothing left to learn.
At some point it will reach us and our haven will be gone
But at least until that happens we can watch the world burn.

This morning we burned up all of our cash,
Shredded bank statements, threw them in the trash.
Smashed up my palmtop into tiny shards,
And scratched the magnetic strips from our cards.
Everyone called in sick and stayed at home
Who wants to spend their last day on the 'phone?
A life of trying to save while we can;
Our biggest regret is our pension plan.

We'll sit on the hilltop and watch the world burn.
We don't need a good position; it's the end of every firm.
Burn all the banks and all the companies,
Set fire to the shops and to the credit agencies.
We'll sit on the hilltop and watch the world burn,
We don't need a good position; it's the end of every firm.
At some point it will reach us and our haven will be gone
But at least until that happens we can watch the world burn.

The temples were crowded and the mosques, too,
The chapels and churches filled every pew.
There were drive-by preachings and soap-box clowns
Crying 'apocalypse' in their black gowns.
Foxhole repentance on offer to all
Men on their knees with their backs to the wall;
But we ran away so we could pretend
That we were atheists up to the end.

We'll sit on the hilltop and watch the world burn.
We don't need faith or religion, we will know the truth by dawn.
Burn all the priests and all the ministries,
Set fire to the scriptures, to metaphysics' mysteries.
We'll sit on the hilltop and watch the world burn,
We don't need faith or religion, we will know the truth by dawn.
At some point it will reach us and our haven will be gone
But at least until that happens we can watch the world burn.

The hospitals are closed, the doctors gone,
No point in saving lives which won't last long.
The firemen are out, deaf to our pleas,
Climbing their ladders to put cats up trees.
Every single shop has been razed and sacked,
There's not a pane of glass that is intact;
Looting and riots in the city streets,
Cops in their uniforms robbing their beats.

We'll sit on the hilltop and watch the world burn.
We don't need their authority, 'cause there's nowhere left to turn.
Burn all the courts and the police stations,
Set fire to the military installations.
We'll sit on the hilltop and watch the world burn.
We don't need their authority, 'cause there's nowhere left to turn.
At some point it will reach us and our haven will be gone
But at least until that happens we can watch the world burn.

We'll sit on the hilltop and watch the world burn.
We don't need anything at all; nothing's worth our time to earn.
Burn all the toys and all the toiletries,
Set fire to the clothes and to all the facilities.
We'll sit on the hilltop and watch the world burn.
We don't need anything at all; nothing's worth our time to earn.
At some point it will reach us and our haven will be gone
But at least until that happens we can watch the world burn.
