Out
I've got to get out of this village,
I'm sure it will flourish without me,
There's a pub and a school and that's about all
Except a building that once was the library.
So I up and left for somewhere else,
And settled down again,
In the nearest town that I could find,
Where I got a new job and I made some new friends.
But I always see my family,
Every other day,
And mum and dad are pleased to see me
And ask if I can stay.
I've got to get out of this town,
I'm sure it will flourish without me,
The people are vile and though they all smile
I know half of them are longing to clout me.
So I up and left for someone else,
And settled down again.
I found a new place with bugger-all space
In a city I don't care to name.
But I always see my family,
When I've got the time,
And mum and dad are always there
So I think they're doing fine.
I've got to get out of the city,
I'm sure it will flourish without me,
The scenery's static, the people are plastic,
And everyone here seems to doubt me.
So I up and left for somewhere else,
And settled down again,
Across the county border,
Where I found a new home and I made some new friends.
But I always see my family,
A week or two between,
And all of us make such a fuss
Of asking how we've been.
I've got to get out of this county,
I'm sure it will flourish without me,
The council is lazy, the mayor is crazy,
And no one seems to care about me.
So I up and left for somewhere else,
And settled down again,
Somewhere near the capital,
Where I got a new job and I made some new friends.
But I always see my family,
When I've got a weekend free,
And mum and dad are always home
And keep my room for me.
I've got to get out of this country,
I'm sure it will flourish without me,
The people are bitter, they gossip and twitter
And don't even notice its bounty.
So I up and left for somewhere else,
And settled down again,
In a land across the ocean
Where I learned a new language and made some new friends.
But I always see my family,
Once or twice a year,
And mum and dad try to be glad
But wish that I were near.
I've got to get out of this race,
The hostile skin doesn't suit me,
I'm open and kind and I know I will find
That one of these days they will shoot me.
But I've nowhere left to go,
I can't find somewhere new,
The planet isn't big enough
To be always on the move.
So I phone up my family,
And tell them that I'm dying,
But even they don't understand.
I hang up on mother crying.
