Our Confession

He wore a sparkly hat,
With sparkly stars,
And he tricked us,
And we laughed
Because we tricked him,
Into doing this gig for free.

So he went home,
Unpaid.
And his wife went
Unfed.
And they cried all night long,
But survived, together.

He was funny,
Good-natured.
Loved people,
Just for being.
Loved life,
Just for living.
Loved her,
Just for her.

He didn't mind going
Unpaid.
He didn't mind going
Hungry.
But he was sad, for her.
He felt he failed.

He never spoke out.
Didn't need to.
He did better gigs,
For nicer people.
And slept happy,
In her arms each night.

We didn't sleep.
We felt ugly,
Selfish.
And we were.
