Spanish

How would you feel if the world spoke Spanish
And you just Portuguese;
If half of what you heard were English,
The other Japanese?
Perhaps you'd find out what it's like
For those God never frees,

For those whose deity doles out handcuffs
For body, soul, and mind;
Or whose education does the same
And leaves them trusting blind
In those whose goal is to control
The whole of humankind.

How would you feel if the world spoke Spanish
And you just Portuguese?
If you could not explain your actions
Could you do what you pleased,
Or would the frozen flow of words
Your freedom also freeze?

Perhaps you would in freedom run
So far in meadows green
That as the sun falls from the sky
The path home can't be seen;
Perhaps you'd find no peace-of-mind
Alone in idyll dream.

How would you feel if the world spoke Spanish
And you just Portuguese;
If half of what you heard were English,
The other Japanese?
Perhaps if you learnt Spanish you
Could live with greater ease.
